After 40 Years of Marriage
Well, there it was...the Blizzard of 2016! "Blizzardzilla" as some were calling it. The tri state area was bombarded with over 2 feet of snow. State of emergency was called in all states affected and everything was shut down; schools, businesses, grocery stores, malls, everything.
My job, (I am a bartender for those of you who don't know) was cancelled Saturday due to the State of Emergency. So, when I finally got back in on my Monday shift, as usual, my regulars came in for happy hour. (This place is like Cheers, same people, same bar stools, same drinks, and they are all friends, for the most part). Two regulars in particular were having a conversation about how they made out in the storm. I over-heard this one gentleman, who sometimes comes in alone, and sometimes with his wife, who said the most wonderful things about his wife to his friend. He said, "We sat with a glass of Gran Marnier, watched the snow fall through our picture window with some soft music on, and I tell ya, I couldn't have asked for a more perfect night".
I then started to actually listen to what he was saying, and he said, "I'm the luckiest guy in the World. My wife is amazing. She raised 2 great kids. She works, shovels snow, she takes care of her mother, cooks me a gourmet meal every night, so who am I to complain? I appreciate her more now after 40 years of marriage, than I did when we first met. And I mean, she puts up with me!"
At this point, I HAD to say something, because I loved what I heard. I had to tell him I loved hearing what he said and that he said it with an impish smile, "Well, Kris, it's true. She's just amazing." I wanted to cry.
Yesterday, this same man was in with his wife, who is just a doll by the way, and while he was in the men's room, I felt it necessary to tell her what I heard him say about her. She immediately blushed and got the biggest, brightest smile on her face. Then she too looked like she wanted to cry. I asked her not to tell him I told her, but I thought she would want to know. She was beyond thrilled to hear that he speaks so highly of her. I'm sure she knows her husband loves her but he probably doesn't tell HER as much as he could.
So the moral of the story here is to tell that someone special in your life how you feel about them as
often as possible. Everyone needs to hear it even though you think or know they know it. Even after 40 years of marriage, it means so much to tell someone who you love about how much you really appreciate him/her. Don't take anything or anyone for granted because tomorrow may be too late. You don't ever want to regret not telling that special someone how you feel. Live life without regret...
